Last night, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alex Edler charged Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, and was given a five-minute major for charging. This video was released by the Head of the Department of Player Safety, Brendan Shanahan, a short time ago, announcing that Edler has received a two game suspension for the play.

This is a pure bone-headed play by Edler, who could have, and should have, made every effort to avoid contact with Smith. What does making that play accomplish? Nothing, nothing at all. The Vancouver Canucks will now be without their best defenseman for the next two games, when they play against the Los Angeles Kings and the Colorado Avalanche. The Canucks are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference, but that can all change in a matter of days because of how tight the race is for the playoffs. Doesn't seem worth it now, does it Alex?
